Prepare for Unpredictable Winter Conditions

The transformation of seasons requires awareness and preparedness to keep you safe. Per the National Weather Service, winter storms bring snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the entire United States and its territories. Blizzards occur when strong wind causes blowing snow and whiteout conditions, making roads impassable. Every year, major cities are paralyzed by snow and ice, and thousands of people are injured, or worse, killed, due to traffic accidents related to slippery roads. Without the proper precaution and response, these annual winter storms can leave residents helpless and fearful.

To prepare for a winter storm, build an emergency supply kit for your car which includes:

  • Cell phone charger
  • First aid kit
  • Jumper cables
  • Spare tire
  • Flares
  • Full tank of gas
  • Sand or kitty litter
  • Tow rope
  • Snow shovel & brush
  • Flashlight
  • Mittens, hats, & boots
  • Water & snacks

If you're caught in a winter storm:

  • If outside – find shelter, try and stay dry, and move around from time to time to keep warm.
  • If in your car – slow down, even if the roads don’t appear to be bad. If you skid, stay calm and ease your foot off the gas, and turn your wheel in the direction you want your car to go.
  • If you’re inside – if your heat goes out, close off unneeded rooms, stuff towels in cracks under doors, and close blinds to keep in heat. Wear layers of clothing to stay warm.

After a winter storm:

  • Be cautious of melted snow and ice – partially cleared roads may be icy or blocked
  • Be aware of power lines that have been knocked down
  • Stay tuned to your local news station for updated information regarding road conditions
  • Check with your local water company to be sure your water is safe to use
