Oil and Gas Case Study

Twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Working long hours is nothing new for Sunbelt Rentals Oil & Gas Services division. In fact, the industry nearly necessitates ‘round-the-clock work, as exploration and extraction crews often have a full docket of jobs to complete; once everything is wrapped up on one site, workers waste no time in packing up and moving to the next location. To accommodate the feverish workflow, many companies provide temporary housing for crews, allowing jobs to be completed quickly, often in as little as seven to ten days.

One of Oil & Gas Services' most recent projects in Odessa, Texas followed a similar route. Sunbelt Rentals worked with numerous other contractors, each specializing in a certain portion of the job, to drill an oil well. Centered on the fracturing of the well, Sunbelt's responsibilities, like those of everyone involved, were focused and highly specialized.

Commonly referred to as fracking, hydraulic fracturing is a method commonly used to extract oil and natural gas. Although some hydraulic fractures form naturally and allow gas and petroleum to flow to reservoir rocks, other fractures require a hands-on approach to release gases. More specifically, the fracking process involves the dissemination of fractures in a rock layer through the use of a pressurized fluid, something Sunbelt Rentals' Oil & Gas Services division is able to accomplish with the use of a test separator. Designed to divide fluids into distinct components – oil, gas and water – test separators are critical to natural gas extraction and unique to the industry.

"Although Oil & Gas Services typically uses equipment similar to the rest of the Sunbelt Rentals team, test separators wouldn't be found anywhere other than an oil field," said Christopher Cox, outside sales representative, Oil & Gas Services. "They're one of our most popular pieces of equipment among customers, and we strive to make things work for them.

"Most of our business is based on customer loyalty, and the majority of our deals are made in the field," Cox said. "We're out there with our customers – renting equipment, drilling wells, building relationships. We want our equipment and services to make sense for them. Bottom line – we want to make it happen for our customers."
